Dexter festival in full bloom

It’s that time of the year when town celebrations are nearly every weekend, and this weekend it is Dexter’s turn.
Dexter Sunflower Days, which only comes around every other year, will begin 9 a.m. Saturday with the live auction at the church parking lot. Though one can expect plenty of knickknacks and households, it’s no ordinary church auction.
Jennifer Mork, organizer for Sunflower Days, said this auction even has a camper on it, among some other possible big-ticket items.
But if an auction isn’t interesting enough for some into the early afternoon, there’s a menagerie of other events, too. And the best part about Sunflower Days is one doesn’t have to go far to enjoy the experiences. Other than the auction, everything is held at the park.
Mid-day, the games commence with beanbags, softball, volleyball and a kiddie tractor pull later at 4 p.m.
After that, things will settle down with a 4 to 7 p.m. chicken fry. Then the fest fires back up with the band Troubleshooter at 8 p.m., which plays everything from country, rock and oldies. Mork said the concert is free, and there will also be a beer garden, concessions and a bike show up the street at the Oasis Bar and Grill.
Dexter’s park is located on the north end of town on Main Street and is easy to spot. Mork said there may be a chance to still enter the softball tournament by calling Natalie Shawbach at 584-6767, and there may be room in the volleyball tourney by calling Trey Mork at 440-5553.
Though Jennifer may be happy Sunflower Days comes around every other year because of the workload, she gets satisfaction from it. She said it’s nice “to see all your ideas come together in one place, to see all the people come and enjoy themselves.”
She recommends people come visit because its easy to find and it’s all in one place.
