The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a head-on collision that left one woman dead on Highway 218 early Sunday morning.
Lt. Eric Roeske, Minnesota State Patrol public information officer, said officials are examining the crash site and waiting on toxicology results for Penny Engelman, 31, of Austin. Engelman died when her 2000 Chevy Cavalier collided with a school bus taking a wedding party to a hotel in Austin.
“We will be looking at the paths the vehicles took … and obviously trying to figure out if there were any drugs or alcohol in the system of the deceased,” Roeske said. “That would shed some light on why this occurred.”
Roeske said the cause may never be known, but contrary to rumors, there is no information that points to it being intentional.
“If (Engelman) crashed into the bus intentionally or not, I truly don’t believe we’ll ever know her state of mind,” he said. “A lot of the factors involved are still under investigation.
“As far as if it was an intentional act, I’m not aware of any information that would confirm that at this point.”
Owatonna resident Timothy A. Bachtle, 52, was driving the bus. No alcohol was detected in his system and he was not injured, according to the state patrol.
The bus was carrying 20 passengers to a hotel in Austin from the Lance Meier and Shelby (Underwood) Meier wedding reception in Blooming Prairie. Terri Underwood, mother of the bride, said neither the bride nor groom was on the bus when it crashed.
“It was the last bus of the night that was transporting friends, family and the wedding party to a hotel in Austin,” Underwood said.
She said the car crossed the center line and continued coming toward the bus. The bus did not tip or go off the road, with the exception of one front tire.
“We don’t know anything about (Engelman), like what her situation was leading up to her driving down the road,” Underwood said.
Of the 20 passengers on the bus, nine were treated and released at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin (formerly Austin Medical Center). Bus passenger Cynthia S. Salwey, 49, was transferred to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester for non-life threatening injuries. She was released Sunday, according to Underwood.
