The Austin boys track and field team took fifth and the Austin girls were eighth at the ‘True Team’ Section 1A meet in Red Wing Tuesday.

Austin senior Max Gillen started slow in the 400-meter dash but he turned it on down the stretch to pick up a first place finish.

“That was a huge win for Max and he really came on in the last 200-meters,” Austin head boys track and field coach Tony Einertson said.

Nate Schwab took fourth in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter run as he came through with a career-best time (4:36.05) in the 1600-meter run.

“Nate was a five-minute mile runner last year and he’s really made some strides this year,” Einertson said.

Sophomore Abby Snater took first in the pole vault for the Packer girls and eighth grader Carolyn Hackel took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.62 seconds.

“(Carolyn) keeps dropping her times and she was running into a pretty strong head-wind for the last 100-meters,” Austin head girls track and field coach coach Nancy Jones said. “The girls all put in some pretty solid performances although I think the heat and wind affected the distance runners.”

The GMLOS girls finished seventh as sophomore Danielle Hanson took first in the 300-meter hurdles. The GMLOS boys finished 10th.
