Library to host book signing

This weekend, kids may learn a little about animal care and a little more about growing up — all from a new children’s book, “Storm.”

New author Mark Smith is displaying his book at the Austin Public Library 1 p.m. Saturday. The book tells a story of his daughter, who fed a weak eagle until it was healthy enough. The illustrations are also from an Austin woman, Linda LaVallie.

Smith, who had been taking classes and attending writing conferences, finished the book a while back, but this is his first book signing. He will also have about 25 copies on hand. He said the book, like other children’s books, can teach life lessons to kids through simple events.

“I’ve written the book on two levels: one being the little girl and the eagle, the other one being a coming of age story,” Smith said.

Smith will also have copies of the book “Amber Waves of Grain,” which features several aspiring authors, including him. Visitors can get their books signed by both Smith and LaVallie.
