The Austin softball team couldn’t hold off Owatonna’s hitters as it dropped both games of a doubleheader to close out the regular season in Todd Park Friday.

The Huskies (9-11 overall, 8-9 Big Nine) hit one homerun in a 5-2 to win and belted four more deep balls in a 15-9 win in the nightcap.

“I’ve never seen that many homeruns in a high school game before,” Austin head coach Tina Strauss said. “Sometimes you’ll see it in college, but not in high school.”

The Packers (5-15 overall, 5-12 Big Nine) led the first game 2-1 after Danielle Tschann doubled in a run and another run scored on a wild pitch in the third inning.

Owatonna tied it up in the fifth when Cailyn McCauley doubled with two outs and Nicole Buck drove her in with a bloop single.

McCauley gave the Huskies the lead for good in the sixth with a three-run homer to center.

Austin had runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth but Jenny Yocom was thrown out at third while trying to advance on a wild pitch.

The Packers took advantage of six first inning errors by Owatonna to take a 9-3 lead in the first frame of the nightcap. Tschann had an RBI-single and Liz Gerhart knocked in two runs with a single in the rally.

However, Austin’s offense couldn’t produce anything else as the Huskies crept back in the game.

Owatonna took the lead for good in the in the fifth when Laura Meyer drove in a run with a bouncing single that hit relief pitcher Marie Clennon in the head and Buck knocked in two runs with a two-out double.

Clennon had come into the game in relief with Austin up 9-7 and she had to leave the game after getting hit by the first batter she faced in the nightcap.

“It’s really tough to see your pitcher go down in that fashion,” Strauss said.

The Huskies added five more runs in the sixth when Rachel Malo launched a two-run homer.
