We have established a special fund for a new facility and are in the early stages of planning. This has been made possible by the extreme generosity of anonymous donors.

One donor has promised us $100,000 and another has promised to match funds once we hit the $200,000 mark. We’ve been at our current location since 1999 and our old building just can’t keep up with the ever increasing number of unwanted animals in the area. Adoptions might be slow at the moment, but the MCHS cares for about 300 homeless animals per year and we appreciate public support.

Thank you

We’d like to express a special thanks to some local businesses for their ongoing support. These businesses keep donation canisters or doghouses on their counters, quietly collecting donations for the MCHS. Thank you to Jerry’s Other Place, Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits, Twice Is Nice, Piggy Blues, Jim’s Market and Liquor Store, Watts Cooking, Austin Veterinary Clinic, Mapleview Lounge, and the Thrift Store.

Looking

for a home

Volunteers on the cat-side of the MCHS have a very special resident who is looking for a very special home. Mercedes is an eight-year-old, neutered and declawed cat who had been adopted out to a loving couple. Because of a serious illness within the family, he was returned to the shelter.

Mercedes is diabetic but his condition can be managed with daily injections of Prozinc and a special diet. He is sweet, mellow, and loves everybody. He needs someone who is willing and financially able to take on the responsibility of his condition. The cost of his treatment is not extreme and he’d be willing to pay it back with extreme love and devotion.

Annual flea market and rummage sale

The annual Flea Market/Rummage Sale will be held on next Saturday and Sunday at the Mower County Fairgrounds, building 9. We will be accepting new, slightly used, or higher quality items. We will not accept clothing, furniture, appliances, electronics, or encyclopedias. Items can still be delivered to the fairgrounds Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. Items will not be accepted at the shelter.

Dog Day

by the River

Jerry’s Other Place will once again hold Dog Day by the River to benefit the MCHS. This fun day will be held on June 18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a silent auction as well as a pet parade, a dunk tank, a costume contest, and animal trick shows. Children can meet Sparky the Fire Dog and all can enjoy demonstrations by the Police Department K9 unit and 4-H. Pork tenderloin sandwiches will be served, too. Pets are welcome but they must be leashed.

Finally, the MCHS would like to acknowledge donations made in memory of “Daisy” Helgeson, “Spike” Helfter, “Boo” Anderson, Steve McLain, Elizabeth Ramlo, and Stan and Jane Stephenson. Thank you.
