The Riverland baseball team received an unexpected gift as it closed out its season with a sweep over Minnesota West on the road Saturday.

The Blue Devils (29-12 overall, 9-3 MCAC South) won by scores of 8-6 and 19-6 in five innings. But the true joy came after the games they when they found out that Rochester split with Anoka-Ramsey — which gives the Blue Devils a share of the MCAC South Division Title.

RCC struggled in the first game but found its bats in the nightcap.

“We came out a little flat, those Rochester games (from last Wednesday) took a lot out of us and we thought they had won the conference going into the day,” Koenigs said. “We got it done and came up with what turned out to be a huge win. The conference title should help our seeding (for the state tournament).”

Kyle Young had a homerun in each game for RCC and now has nine on the year and Jordan Mondeel, a freshman from Albert Lea, had two homers in the nightcap.
