Austin Medical Center’s laboratory has been awarded an accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) based on the results of a recent on-site inspection.

Accreditation is given only to laboratories that apply rigid standards of quality in day-to-day operations, demonstrate continued accuracy in the performance of proficiency testing, and pass a rigorous on-site laboratory survey.

During the accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory.

Dr. Lester Wold, pathologist and laboratory medical director at AMC, said the accreditation means he hospital is meeting the highest standards possible.

“By being accredited by CAP, we are ensuring that our testing procedures and results are as consistently reliable as possible for all our patients and providers,” Wold said. “All laboratory staff works very hard to ensure that all patients are cared for appropriately and timely. Everyone should be very proud of this accreditation, and patients can be assured they are received quality care, close to home.”
