El Parral’s going to be packed with good music from cultures around the world Friday night.
The Robert Everest Expedition, a Twin Cities-based musical collective, is coming to Austin to showcase its unique worldly stylings. Featuring music and musical styles from around the globe, the group will perform all sorts of Latin dance fusion music.
“A lot of it just comes from my experiences from different parts of the world,” said Robert Everest, frontman for the group.
Everest has traveled the world, from Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela to West Africa, Italy and Spain. He’s a University of Minnesota graduate as well, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics.
The group of seven members is Everest’s main project, in which he experiments with melodies and instruments, whether it be playing Jazz standards with a salsa melody, using a mandolin to play tango or using classical guitar to play salsa.
“There’s so many incredible sounds that are produced throughout the world,” Everest said.
The event takes place from 8 p.m. to midnight April 8 as part of Austin Public Library’s New Harmonies exhibit, which has brought poets and musicians from all over to Austin. It is sponsored by the library the Human Rights Commission and the Welcome Center.
“It’s just a great way to show people the types of things that are going on in the world,” said Jake Vela, Welcome Center executive director. “It’s a great way to listen to other kinds of music.”
