Will Austin dogs have a place to roam?

Proponents of an Austin dog park may have reason to be hopeful.
City Council members agreed Monday night to allow a citizen group to present its case at an upcoming work session.
Michael Schatz, an Austin resident speaking for the group, said if funding for the park is a concern, the group is willing to do much of the legwork and fundraising. He said a dog park would not only benefit dogs, but owners would have an opportunity to relax, let their dogs run off the leash and meet new people.
“I cannot state enough how wonderful (dog parks) really are,” Schatz said. “Every major city has one. … It’s primarily for the benefit of the citizens of Austin.”
Mayor Tom Stiehm, who has been a supporter of a dog park, nodded his head in agreement as Schatz listed the positive impact he thinks a dog park could have on the city.
Schatz said he will provide more information about funding at the work session, which is scheduled after the regular City Council meeting May 2.
