Viking girls win home invite

HAYFIELD — If you wanted to know how the Hayfield girls did at their home triangular track meet Thursday, all you really had to see was watch the 400-meter dash.
After all, it’s not very often that a runner is throwing out two thumbs up while smiling at her teammates on the final turn of a race — especially a sprint.
But that’s exactly what Hayfield eighth grader Madison Heydt did as she was cruising around the corner on her way to a first place finish in the 400-meter dash.
That was one of 12 first place finishes for the Vikings, who went on to win the meet with a team score of 95 as Cannon Falls finished second with 59 and Lyle/Pacelli had a score of 30.
Cannon Falls won the boys meet with a score of 113.5, while Hayfield had a score of 61.5 and L/P finished with nine points.
The Viking girls got a boost from sophomore Rachel Czaplewski, who was part of four first place events. She anchored the first place 4 x 200-meter relay team, ran third for the first place 4 x 100-meter relay team and won the high jump.
However, it was Czaplewski’s last win that was the most impressive as the sprinted to a first place finish in the 200-meter dash in her first time ever running the race.
“I was feeling tired (going into the 200-meter dash) and I just got put into it today,” she said. “I was pretty surprised how well I did, but it’s just running (like any other race).”
While track and field is an individual sport first, Czaplewski said that the Vikings are starting to embrace the team aspect of it —especially on the relays.
“We all encourage each other and the relays bond together well,” she said.
While Lyle/Pacelli’s girls don’t have a lot of competitors, they did have two standout performances. German foreign exchange student Maya Ebeling, a junior, won the shot put by eight feet and the discus by 40 feet. Her discus distance (104 feet, 11 inches) was better than all but one of the boys.
L/P freshman Madeline Kraemer spent a lot of time by herself on the track as she won the 1600-meter run by 17 seconds and she took the 3200-meter run by 47 seconds.
Kraemer was just pleased to be out and running as L/P has had a few meets canceled due to the weather.
“There wasn’t a lot of teams here, so there wasn’t too much competition to compare myself against,” she said. “But I felt like I had good times. It can be hard to stay motivated, but you’ve got to set mental goals for time splits and go from there.”
Hayfield eighth grader Johanna Bungum took first in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
Hayfield senior Caleb Tindal took first in the boys discus and shot put.
