ROSE CREEK — The Southland softball team showed how dangerous it can be when it holds its opponent’s offenses in check at a doubleheader in Rose Creek Thursday.

After dropping the first contest to Grand Meadow/LeRoy/Ostrander/Kingsland (2-2 overall, 2-2 Three Rivers) by a score of 17-16, the Rebels rebounded with a 17-3 win in the nightcap.

Southland (3-2 overall, 3-2 Three Rivers) committed six errors in the opener and had just two late miscues in the win.

“Jana pitched very well and the defense played well in the second game,” Southland head coach Greg Shulte said. “We had a few mistakes in the first game and that’s something we can work on and we can fix. It’s still early and I’m very pleased how the team is coming along.”

Southland sophomore pitcher Jana Schammel retired the first nine hitters she saw in the nightcap as her team built a 13-0 lead. Her best work was done in the middle of GMLOK’s order as she held Emily Schlitter and Jasper Hamersma to a total of just two hits and one RBI. Those two combined for 10 hits and 11 RBIs in the first game.

Schammel had success, despite dealing with horrendous conditions that saw temperatures dip in the low 40s with strong winds and there was even some sprinkling in the first game.

“We had to come out and play better after that first game,” she said. “It’s a long night and it’s hard, especially with the rain. It’s tough to pitch, because the ball is slippery and sandy.”

Southland broke open the game with 11 runs in the second inning. Sarah Nelson, who was three-for-three with 3 RBIs and Lindsey Bottema each had two out, two run hits to close the rally.

Bottema, who normally looks to bunt to get on base, finished with five RBIs in the second game.

“It’s a lot more fun to hit sometimes, but it’s fun to bunt too,” she said.

Southland had a chance to tie the first game as it scored four runs to pull within one run in the bottom of the seventh. But Holly Goergen popped out with the tying run on third to end the comeback.

The Rebels, who finished with 23 hits in the doubleheader, started the second game strong and never looked back.

“We came out and played tough in the second game,” Schulte said. “They all still hit the ball very well even though the bat stings your hand in the cold weather.”
