The Austin baseball team finally landed in the win column when it split a doubleheader with Rochester Century (4-3 overall, 4-3 Big Nine) at Dick Seltz Field Friday.

The Packers lost the opener 3-2 and pulled off a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Austin was clinging to a one-run lead with two outs in the top of the seventh and Century had a runner on first when right fielder Aaron Goetz attempted to make a diving catch on a line drive, but missed it.

Goetz recovered the ball in time to get it to first baseman Andrew Kaiser who hit catcher Josh Hart in time to get the Century runner out as he was trying to score from first on the play.

“It was well executed, but you’d like to keep the ball in front of you there,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said. “Fortunately we made the play, but there was a lot of emotions running during it.”

Sophomore hurler Marcus Stoulil pitched seven innings while allowing just one run in the win for the Packers (1-7 overall, 1-6 Big Nine).

“Marcus did a good job competing and he got out of some jams,” Watkins said.

Austin took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Gabe Kasak scored from second when Century threw the ball away while trying to turn a double play on a Quinn Yocom grounder.

Austin had just two hits in the opening game as Mitch Brown struck out five of the last six Packer hitters he saw.

“He’s an excellent pitcher and one of the best we’ve seen all year,” Watkins said. “He shut us down.”

Jacob Thompson pitched well for Austin, but took a tough luck loss as he went all seven innings.
