DEXTER — A man is in custody after allegedly robbing the Lake Geo Travel Plaza and leading police on a high-speed chase Saturday morning.

Around 7:10 a.m., a man wearing a black ski mask entered the Travel Plaza near Dexter and passed cashier Molly Frank a note telling her to be quiet, give him the money and everything will be OK.

Frank said she called out to a deli worker, but opened the cash register and let the man take the money. She didn’t know how much money was in the register.

“Giving them money is more important than losing your life,” Frank said.

Frank said she couldn’t tell if the man was armed.

“I couldn’t see that he had a gun,” she said.

Shortly after 7:30, police saw the man’s vehicle and began pursuit north of Dexter. The chase continued west through Brownsdale and Lansing.

The suspect turned north on 570th Avenue and was caught around 7:46 a.m. near the Dodge-Mower Road, a few miles northwest of Waltham, according to scanner reports.

Frank said the police told her the alleged robber was caught after crashing his car.

The pursuit lasted about 15 minutes with speeds reported near 80 mph before the suspect slowed to around 50 mph. A mix of rain and snow Friday night made road conditions slippery Saturday.

Frank said she planned to finish her shift at the plaza Saturday, which was scheduled to end at 2 p.m.

“(It) woke me up for the day,” she said.

The sheriff’s office was unable to comment about the robbery.
