An 85-year-old rural Austin woman is out $3,800 after getting scammed by someone she believed was her granddaughter.

Sheriff Terese Amazi said the woman received a phone call from someone claiming to be her granddaughter. The person told her she had been in a car accident in Mexico and needed her to wire money to pay for the accident.

The woman wired $3,800 to Mexico and got a call back from the person asking for the routing number, which allows access to the money from anywhere in the world. When the woman called her granddaughter Sunday, two days after the initial phone call, to ask when she would pay the money back, her granddaughter knew nothing about the money and said she had not been in Mexico.

There are no suspects in the incident. Amazi said Austin area residents should be careful if they receive similar requests from someone claiming to be a friend or family.
