The Mower County jail’s first two female inmates were transferred in from Steele County on Friday, according to Sheriff Terese Amazi said.
After a union grievance was resolved, the female wing of the new jail finally opened.
Mower County may also begin housing women and special needs inmates from other counties. About a dozen counties in southeast Minnesota are looking into grouping their jail populations to save money.
“Any opportunity, we will take,” Amazi said.
However, she said, those discussions are very preliminary.
