Not only have Austin Residents had a chance to clean up the city, they’ll get a chance to raise money by doing so before this weekend.
Customers who bring their plastic or aluminum beverage containers to the Super Fresh Produce store in Austin will raise 10 cents per container for Austin Coalition for Environmental Sustainability (ACES). Among that, Conservation Minnesota Voter Center will make a donation to help ACES and promote the Recycling Refund bill now being discussed at the Minnesota Capitol.
“The Recycling Refund is a simple and convenient way to promote recycling and raise money for organizations, such as ACES,” said Conservation Minnesota Voter Center Executive Director Paul Austin. “If lawmakers in St. Paul approve the Recycling Refund, Austin residents and families statewide could generate lots of money for their favorite charities.”
As part of Clean Up Austin Day on Saturday, April 30, the Conservation Minnesota Voter Fund will make a 10 cent donation to ACES for every can and bottle collected (up to 10,000) in its recent recycling drive. Groups will meet Saturday in the city pool parking lot for the final tally of containers and the delivery of the check.
Representatives from both groups will answer questions about the recycling drive and the recycling refund bill in process.
According to a news release, Minnesota lags behind other states with recycling deposits, including Iowa and Michigan, both of which recycle more than 90 percent of their beverage containers.
