City to vote on buying Budget Oil for flood mitigation

City Council members will decide Monday night whether to buy out Budget Oil as part of the city’s flood mitigation plan.

The gas station, which is located within blocks of the Cedar River at 501 Oakland Ave. E, has frequent flooding problems. While the owners have held off on selling the station until now, a memo from City Engineer Jon Erichson to council members says the owner has agreed to sell the property.

The property was recently appraised at $293,000, which is what the city is offering for the acquisition. Funding for the purchase would come from the local option sales tax and a DNR flood mitigation grant.

Council members will vote on the acquisition at a 5:30 p.m. meeting Monday night at City Hall. They will also vote to approve several technical requests related to upcoming street improvements. Members will meet for a work session immediately following the meeting.
