A stolen car from Arizona was recovered in Austin Monday evening, and Police Chief Brian Krueger said the driver of the car was unaware it was stolen.

A 19-year-old Austin man was pulled over for having a rear brake light out on his teal 1970 Chevy Chevelle around 6 p.m. When the officer ran the vehicle identification number, it came up as reported stolen in Arizona.

The man’s father arrived and said his son purchased the car from Mike Brooks, 43, of Austin.

Brooks said he bought the car in Tucson, Ariz. When he purchased it, he got the keys and the title. Brooks, who said he has bought and sold thousands of cars in his life, said something like this has never happened to him.

“I’ve never ever had this happen to me,” he said. “I’m going to be out like $5,000.”

Brooks said he has been in contact with police and will provide the title and any other information that could help the case.
