The Riverland baseball team split a pair of pitchers’ duels at Rochester Community and Technical College Friday.
The Blue Devils (22-11 overall, 4-2 MCAC South) dropped the first game 1-0 in eight innings and won the second contest 3-2.
RCTC won the first game with a one-out RBI single off in the eighth off Tyler Jones, who has taken three tough losses this year.
“He’s lost three games like this one already where he’s pitched great,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “The wind was blowing in today and it was a good day for all the pitchers.”
Kyle Young tied the RCC career record for homers when he blasted a two-run shot in the first inning of the nightcap and RCC scored another run in the second to go up 3-1.
Young, a sophomore from Forest Lake, Minn., now has 17 homers in his Blue Devil career.
RCTC scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had runners at the corners with one out when relief pitcher Michael Osmundson came in and struck out two straight to end the game.
RCC had runners on second and third with one out in the first inning of the opener and it left the bases loaded in the second.
“We’re still struggling with hitting with the bases loaded, but there’s not much we can change now,” Koenigs said. “We just have to hope we start coming through.”
