If it works, keep doing it.
That’s what the Austin High School Key Club believes when it comes to organizing fundraisers.
Key Club members are sponsoring a soup luncheon and silent auction to benefit the March of Dimes this Sunday.
“It’s about leadership, and the motto of key club is caring for life, and it’s just one way that they can show that,” said Julie Hale, Key Club adviser.
The Key Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Service Club, which supports the March of Dimes, an organization dedicated to the health of babies.
Several AHS seniors decided to put together a fundraiser after making persuasive speeches about the March of Dimes in a speech class at Riverland Community College. To that end, they decided to put on a luncheon and silent auction which ended up raising $3,200.
The fundraiser was so successful, the March of Dimes gave the AHS Key Club national recognition. While the students who put it together have since gone on to college, Hale said the current group wanted to continue.
“It’s always exciting when you have students with busy lives (organize) a student-led event that raised a lot of money,” she said.
The luncheon and silent auction takes place April 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Chicken wild rice or chicken noodle soup will be served, along with a roll, cookies and a drink. Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 at the door, with children 5 and under getting in free. Advanced tickets may be purchased from Hale at AHS. The silent auction will end at 12:45 p.m.
