Seibel Center waiting on grant

The Michael Seibel Visitation Center is about to start the waiting game.

On Friday, the center will apply for a three-year, $400,000 grant to reinstate key funding the non-profit lost last year.

The center lost a $350,000 grant last year. While the grant would address a different set of issues, it would provide much needed funding for the non-profit center, according to Director Heather Steinkamp.

This grant would focus more on developing services and education. A portion of the grant must be spent on education efforts.

Seibel Center staff may have to wait until September to learn if they received the grant, according to Kathy Stutzman, who helped write the grant on the center’s behalf.

The grant wouldn’t require any county funding, but it would require the services of Finance Director Donna Welsh, whose work would be reimbursed.

The county board already backed the application, and Stutzman will likely seek letters of support from U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, D-Minn, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.

Steinkamp previously said she is hopeful about the center’s chances of receiving the grant.

“I feel very good about it,” she said.
