Both Austin state qualifying wrestlers lost their first round matches at the Class ‘AAA’ state meet in Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul Friday.
They will now compete in the consolation round.
Austin sophomore Devon Felten lost his opening match to Erik Olson of Sauk Rapids/Rice on a 7-4 decision at 103 pounds.
Felten led 4-2, but couldn’t hang on.
“Devon wrestled very well. He was in a position to win in the third period,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “But you have to wrestle a full six minutes when your up here. The kid he wrestled got a reversal and a near fall to win the match. I think we have a good shot of wrestlebacks. With two sophomores here, were glad to be here for the experience and we want to get more matches.”
Austin sophomore Erick Power was pinned in the second period in his first round match against Corey Latuff of Hastings at 119 pounds.
“Really solid wrestler from Hastings that he wrestled,” Kinney said. “We knew he was a strong wrestler coming in. It’s okay to be in this spot because if you don’t win he’s tough so he could win the next one.”
