PRIOR LAKE, Minn. (AP) — While many Minnesota cities grapple with budget deficits, one community finds itself in an enviable position.

The city of Prior Lake has a $2 million surplus. And, Mayor Mike Myser thinks it ought to be returned to local taxpayers. The mayor has been talking with City Council members and city staff about rebate checks. Council members have criticized Myser for floating the idea without giving them advance notice.

The Star Tribune reports that growing building and development permits and conservative city budgets put Prior Lake well into the black. Myser hopes to bring the issue back to the council this month or next.
