Lawrence McIver, 96

Funeral services for Dr. Lawrence W. McIver of Albert Lea, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Tom Biatek will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday evening at Bonnerup Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea area veterans groups.

Dr. McIver died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at the Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea. He was 96 years of age.

Lawrence was born July 31, 1914, in Kimball, the son of Walter and Susan (Gryte) McIver. He was a graduate of Kimball High School and Hamline University. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Peterson. Larry graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School in 1937 and practiced general dentistry from 1938 to 1942 in Minneapolis. He served three years in the U.S. Navy. Larry then graduated from the University of Illinois in orthodontics and started orthodontic practice in 1947.

He was a life member of the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists, the Edward H Angle Society of Orthodontists, a fellow in International College of Dentists and the Minnesota Dental Association. In 1982 he received the Dr. Amber B. Hall Award Winner for Distinguished Dental Alumnus from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Larry developed many new products and techniques in orthodontics. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion, the Elks Club and the Golden K Kiwanis.

In his leisure time, Lawrence enjoyed photography, boating, fishing and golf. His yard was always in pristine condition as well as his garden. Over the years, he was a frequent speaker at dental meetings across the country. After his retirement he would winter in Arizona.

Following the death of Dorothy, Larry was united in marriage to Jeanette Halvorsen in 1996 in Albert Lea.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Jeanette McIver, of Albert Lea; children, Barbara (Burt) Booth of Burnsville and Stephan J. McIver of Chandler, Ariz. There are two stepchildren: Joan (John) Wolf of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Jim (Christine) Stieler of Loveland, Colo. Grandchildren include Kory (Brandi) McIver, Karyn (Daniel) Hubbard, Riki (Jeff) Carlston, Denise (Erik) Swenson, Jodi (Brad) McMahan, Jill (Dave) Brannon, Melissa (Brian) McMahan, Jessica Stieler, Kent Stieler and Corrine (Chase) Pearl. There are several great-grandchildren.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Dorothy.

Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers to hospice or the humane society.
