The Riverland baseball team opened play this weekend by dropping two of its first three games in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

The Blue Devils split a doubleheader with Waubonsee, Ill. on Sunday and lost to Montgomery-Germantown, Maryland on Saturday.

Brad Winkelman, a sophomore from Rapid City, S.D., pitched a two-hit shutout in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Waubonsee (4-3 overall), which is ranked No. 12 in the NJCAA.

“Brad stepped up at the right time for us and he shut out a really good team,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said.

The Blue Devils (1-2 overall) scored all three of their runs in the first inning as Andrew Schunck, Reece Steckler and Matt Boswell all knocked in runs.

Waubonsee won the first game 10-3.

RCC lost its first game of the season to M-G (6-1 overall), which is ranked No. 6 in the NJCAA, by a score of 6-0.

Tyler Jones, a sophomore from Rapid City, struck out 10 in five innings but he allowed three runs.

In all, Koenigs was pleased with how RCC opened up, considering it was their first time on grass all season.

“We’re getting good experience for our young guys and the veterans are getting back in the groove,” Koenigs said. “It’s a big adjustment to the new bats we’re using and it’s like swinging with wood only worse. We’re an extra base hitting team, but we’ve got to do a little better job of hitting line drives.”
