Genevieve M. Schneider, 90

Funeral services for Genevieve M. Schneider of Albert Lea will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. Tom Biatek will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Albert Lea.

Genevieve passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Albert Lea Medical Center. She was 90 years of age.

Genevieve Mae Richards was born to Robert and Ella (Nelson) Richards on Sept. 21, 1920, in Albert Lea. She attended elementary schools at North side and Central and was a graduate of Albert Lea High School in the class of 1938, where she was elected to the National Honor Society and awarded her journalism letter and pin, which led to her first employment as society editor of the Albert Lea Tribune. From there was an opportunity to be bookkeeper and varitypist at Church Lithograph and Engraving Company, where she was also made secretary-treasurer of the firm.

In 1950, Genevieve was united in marriage to Lloyd Schneider on April 9, 1939, and in 1950 together they moved to Winona where they lived for 10 years. During that time she completed a study for dental assistance at the University of Minnesota Center for Continuing Education and was employed by Dr. Lawrence Korda.

Genevieve’s husband transferred back to Albert Lea in 1960 and she was employed at the Sperry Hutchinson Store until it was closed. She then attended the Technical School in Albert Lea and was employed as a nursing assistant at St. John’s Lutheran Home until her retirement.

Genevieve’s interests were growing many kinds of flowers, which she shared with friends. Canning, cooking and preserving fruits were also among her talents. She also enjoyed nature studies, bird watching, theater, music and reading. A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Genevieve also was a member of the Eastern Star, Wa-tan-ye Service Club, VFW Auxiliary, NARFE, Friends of the Library and the Audubon Society.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd, on Nov. 23, 2009, and her sister, Jeanette Bump.

Surviving are nephews: Bob Bump of Bloomington and Charles Schneider of Frankfort, N.Y.; niece, Marian (Schneider) Knutson of Lakeville; and several great nephews and two great-nieces.

A very heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff on the Special Care Unit of the Albert Lea Medical Center for their exceptional care and compassionate attention given to Genevieve.
