The Hayfield boys basketball team did what it had to gut out a 40-38 win over La Crescent (8-11 overall, 4-5 HVL Gold) in Hayfield Friday.

Hayfield junior Bobbie Stephens hit a three with 1:45 left to put the Vikings (14-5 overall, 5-4 HVL Gold) up 36-34 and they held on from that point.

“It was one of the ugliest offensive games I’ve seen by both teams,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “It was tough to watch, but our defense played great and I’m thankful for the win.”

“Brady played a big role,” Pack said.

The Vikings led 17-8 early on, but the Lancers closed the gap to 19-16 at the half.
