Krista Viehauser has played a lot of basketball in Austin over the past few years and in what was most likely her last game in her hometown, she made it a night to remember.

Viehauser, an RCC sophomore and Austin High School grad, became Riverland’s all-time leading scorer as she poured in a career-high 37 points to lead the Blue Devils to an 81-73 win over Ridgewater (13-10 overall, 7-5 MCAC South) in their home finale Riverland Gym Wednesday.

“What a way for her to go out. She just kind of took over the entire game,” RCC head coach Suzy Hebrink said of Viehauser.

Viehauser, who now has 1,072 career points with at least one game to play, scored the record breaking points on a short jumper to make it 26-15 RCC with 10:50 left in the game. The game was stopped and Viehauser was honored.

Austin grad Brooke (Monson) DeBoer was RCC’s former career leading scorer with 1,043 points.

“It’s really cool and I’m glad that us Austin girls can put it up there,” said Viehauser who was 17-for-28 from the field while getting 17 rebounds, eight steals and four assists. “Coming in here, I never thought that I’d be (breaking the record). It’s a very good achievement.”

Viehauser started both halves strong as she scored eight in the first five minutes of the first half and eight in the first three minutes of the second half.

She had a chance for 40 late in the game, but after resting just two minutes on the night, she was a little winded.

“I was really tired but I’m good at hiding it,” Viehauser said. “It’s a very good thing we (started the second half strong), because they came back and hit shots.”

RCC had led 56-34 with 17:39 left in the game before Ridgewater (13-10 overall, 7-5 MCAC South) began to creep back in it.

Ridgewater had beaten RCC 87-58 earlier this season, but on Wednesday it was a different game.

“It’s exciting to play well against them,” Hebrink said. “We knew we could play with them and I think we did a good job on defense against their posts.”

Brooke Rosenstiel had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists for RCC, which needs to win at Fergus Falls Saturday and have Rochester lose its last game to have a chance at the postseason.

Either way, Viehauser, who was sixth in the NJCAA in scoring headed into Wednesday’s game, will likely play college basketball after this season as she has a couple of scholarship offers from four-year schools.
