This song is for you

This year’s singing valentines, delivering singing love notes, are Paige Smith, (from left), Annie Holtz, Amy Johnson, and Abby Lief.

For a group of students at Pacelli Catholic School, Valentine’s Day is all about spreading the love — through music.

In keeping with a long-standing Pacelli tradition, members of the school’s women’s quartet will once again don their brightest Valentine’s Day colors and head out to businesses and homes in the Austin area in honor of the holiday.

But they won’t just be showing up on any doorstep. The group of girls will be taking singing Valentine’s orders as part of the school’s fundraising campaign.

For those interested in hiring the girls to sing to their special someone, they’ll be available throughout the day for singing Valentines.

While the day of singing telegrams will be a blessing to those on the receiving end, those involved say it’s a treat for them, as well.

“We just love singing,” said Paige Smith, a sophomore. “It makes people feel good when we sing to them.”

Considering the students are representing the entire school, it’s also a way for those in the community to get to know local students and build relationships.

“Any time we can get our kids out in the community and brighten people’s days, it’s good,” said Mary Holtorf, Pacelli’s principal. “They just get such a sense of joy doing it.”

It’s also good exposure for the school’s choir programs.

“It’s a great way for the girls to go out in the community and spread some love from Pacelli Catholic High School,” said Kelsey Korfhage, Pacelli’s music director.

Smith, freshman Annie Holtz, and juniors Amy Johnson and Abby Leif will sing “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” or “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.” They’ll also be giving away flowers to Valentines.

The Women’s Quartet will be singing valentines around town from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14.

These women will be in demand during Valentine’s Day, and those who want to give their valentine the gift of song must call Pacelli High School at 437-3278 to reserve a Singing Valentine.
