Southland girls overcome rusty first half

The Southland girls’’ basketball team overcame a rusty first half Thursday night, bouncing back and defeating St. Charles 69-65 in St. Charles.
The Rebels (15-4) are coming off a string of five days where they didn’t so much as practice and it showed in the first half.
“We started really rusty,” head coach Bob Sheehan said.
“We had quite a few turnovers, but we stayed close and played really good defense. The second half we just clawed back and took the lead late in the second half by making freethrows and controlling the ball.”
Southland was led by Jana Schammel with 20 points followed by sister Brandi Schammel with 14 points. Lindsey Bottema kicked in 11 points and Madilyn Schmitz scored 10 points.
Southland hit for five three-pointers, four of them coming from Jana Schammel.
