“Devon is wrestling with a great deal of confidence right now,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “He has his sights set on a number of big goals, and knows that he will have to wrestle well to reach those goals. On Saturday, he dominated two strong opponents with a variety of takedowns and pinning combinations.”

Herrera won his final 4-1 over Adam Treptau of Buffalo and he had a pin and a 9-4 win in his other matches.

It was the first tournament title for Herrera, who was seeded fourth and beat the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds to win.

“Thomas was very aggressive on offense,” Kinney said.

Russell won with a 12-3 major decision in the second round, but he was pinned by Cedric Jeminez with 51 seconds left in the match. Russell had led 4-2 going into the third.

“I told (Brennen) to take the bottom position for the last period, and his opponent used a very tough crab ride to turn him and secure the fall,” Kinney said. “Placing him down was a strategic error on my part because Brennen had dominated in the nuetral position throughout the first four minutes of the match.”

Erick Power took third at 119 pounds, Brandon Cotter took third at 125 pounds, Alex Amrich took fifth at 130 pounds, Thao Doan took sixth at 135 pounds, Michael Gaines took fourth at 145 pounds and Mitch Tebay took sixth at 160.
