Austin Bruins fans weren’t shy with their money Saturday night at Riverside arena. They raised more than $23,000 for breast cancer research in the few hours they were there.

The original plan, devised by the Bruins and Hormel Institute, was to raise at least $5,000. However, creative fundraisers throughout the game sparked more interest than the planners had thought.

A live auction for pink jerseys, which the Bruins’ players wore during the game, raised more than $5,000 by itself. The most expensive jersey sold for $2,700, followed by $1,500, $900 and many others for several hundred.

Other items included autographed NHL memorabilia, a signed Bruins team photo, NHL jerseys and a breast cancer quilt, which were all part of a silent auction. Visitors also bought pink T-shirts.

During the intermissions, representatives from the Hormel Institute and cancer survivors informed the crowd about breast cancer.

All 1,900 tickets printed for the game sold out. Along with the game, spectators also got to see a Bruins dance, a solo song by a Bruins player and a head shaving of Bruins’ defenseman, John Kirby.

All proceeds from the event will go toward breast cancer research at the Hormel Institute.
