Austin is in for a professional concert by two of its past residents who are back in town.

Rick and Matthew Penning, who both grew up in Austin and attended Austin High School, will perform at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20.

The Pennings both have a rich background in music. They were active in High School music and were involved in the church at Our Savior’s.

Rick earned his doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance from the University of Minnesota’s School of Music. He’s won first place in the Metropolitan Opera District Competition and has performed more than 35 operatic roles.

Matthew specializes in organ playing. He played the piano throughout high school and during church in his younger years. He earned his master of sacred music degree from Luther Seminary in 1996. He currently oversees a multi-generational music ministry of 10 vocal, handbell and instrumental ensembles while playing organ.

Ken Jensen of Austin taught both Pennings when they were in high school. He remembers singing with their father, who was a big influence on them.

“They are very professional in their chosen fields, and they’re well thought of by musicians throughout the states,” Jensen said. “We think it’s a privilege to have them come and share their musical talents with the rest of Austin.”

The brothers will presents their ensemble after Our Savior’s evening prayer. The concert is free and open to the public.
