The Austin gymnastics team edged out Pine Island 137.025-136.800 in the Austin YMCA Thursday.

“We were a little fortunate to come on top tonight,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “This meet could have easily went the other way. PI has a great group of seniors that lead their team beautifully. Tonight really makes both teams focus on the up coming section 1A meet were we will go head to head again to see who will represent 1a at the state meet.”

Abby Bickler, who finished second overall, and Selena Hataye, who was third overall, each scored a season’s best mark on the vault to give the Packers a boost.

Austin had three no fall routines on the beam and it had five good scores in the bars.

The Packers gained the most ground on the floor, where they had five solid routines.

“This was the event that allowed us to pull into a slight lead,” Raymond said.
