HAYFIELD — After a somewhat frustrating first half, Hayfield guard Bobbie Stephens decided to do what he does best — shoot the three-pointer.

Stephens drained all six of his attempts from downtown in the second half as Hayfield rallied past Winona Cotter 66-48 in Hayfield Tuesday.

The junior sharpshooter finished 8-for-12 on threes while scoring 26 points for the Vikings (12-5 overall). He drilled three of them in a 1:30 spurt that helped his team close out Cotter (4-15 overall) with an 11-2 run.

“The game plan going in was looking inside and beating up on those little guys,” Stephens said. “I guess when you’re feeling it, you’re feeling it, when you’re not, you’re not.”

Hayfield did go inside early on as Brady Stevens made his presence known with a few inside scores that came on feeds from freshman point guard Cole Kruger, who finished with 11 points, five rebounds and nine assists.

Kruger looked inside in the first half, but in the second half he and Tyler Krekling, who had eight assists, made a point to get the ball to Stephens on the perimeter.

“It seemed like if we passed it around, we’d get Bobbie open, easy driving room, or get somebody posted up,” Kruger said. “Brady (Stevens) was always finding cuts (in the first half) and we’d get it to him late, then they started keying in on him and Bobbie was getting open.”

The Vikings led just 29-28 with 1:46 left in the first half, but they scored the last four points of the first half as Stevens hit a jumper with four seconds left and they opened the second half by scoring seven straight.

Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said the cold weather outside may have had an impact on his team early.

“I told them before the game that it’s a night where there’s not going to be many people there and you’ll have to create your own energy,” he said. “Offensively we got off to a decent start, but defensively we kind of fell asleep and they caught us off guard. We gave up too many easy looks in the first half.”

Pack credited his play-makers for getting Stephens so many wide open looks in the second half.

“When (Bobbie) gets in a rhythm he doesn’t need much room,” he said. “Our guys do a good job of setting screens for him and getting him good passes where he can catch and shoot. That’s often times overlooked. If you get out of rhythm off a bad pass, it’s tough to be a good shooter.”

Tyler Anderson blocked five shots for the Vikings.
