Austin police are investigating a stabbing that took place Wednesday night around 6 p.m.

The incident occurred at the 200 block of Fourth Avenue Northeast when a black male approached a man talking on his cell phone outside.

The suspect told the man to empty his pockets. The man refused and attempted to flee, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger. The suspect then allegedly got on top of him and stabbed him in the upper thigh with a 6-inch metal pick.

The man was transported to Austin Medical Center by Gold Cross with the pick still in his thigh.

Police set up a perimeter and attempted to track the suspect with K9 Ghost but were unable to locate the man. He was last seen near the pool area after apparently heading east along the bike path north of the library.

The suspect is described as a skinny, 6’1” black male between the ages of 20 and 23. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Krueger said the stabbing is under investigation.
