New year starts out with light snow

The first snowfall of the new year is a lot more mild than we’re used to this winter.
Mower County is expected to get between 2 and 4 inches of snow over a two- to three-day period, according to the National Weather Service. Snowfall began Monday morning and is expected to last into Tuesday, possibly even Wednesday, according to Tim Halbach, a NWS meteorologist.
“(It’s) kind of a light snow, with not a whole lot of winds to blow it around either,” Halbach said.
More light snow could come this weekend, as another light storm system will blow into the area. That won’t help the temperature, however. Today’s high will be at 21 degrees, but temps will drop as the week goes on. This weekend is going to be frigid, as highs will be in the single digits and lows will be in the -10s, before windchills.
