Patience paid off for the Hayfield boys basketball team as it beat Byron (11-4 overall) 50-48 in overtime Tuesday.
The Vikings (11-4 overall, 3-3 HVL Gold) held the ball for the final two and a half minutes on the last possession of overtime before Brady Kramer collected a loose ball off of a blocked shot from Tyler Krekling and drilled an 18-footer from near the top of the key.
“It was great to hold the ball that long although that wasn’t the plan to begin with,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “We tried to get a couple of things earlier but nothing opened up. Once it got to a minute and a half, we just decided to hold it.”
Hayfield, which had led 46-43 in the second half also held the ball for the last minute and a half at the end of regulation but Bobbie Stephens, who had 15 points on five threes, missed a wide open three at the buzzer.
Bryon led 29-21 at the half.
Hayfield scoring: Bobbie Stephens, 15; Tyler Krekling, 10; Brady Kramer, 9; Brady Stevens, 7; Cole Kruger, 5; Tyler Anderson, 2; three-pointers: 42 percent (8-for-19); free throws: 57 percent (4-for-7)
