Faribault tops Austin wrestling team

The Austin wrestling team showed that it still has some work to do after a 48-26 loss to Faribault in Ove Berven Gym Friday.
The Falcons racked up four pins and they won two matches by forfeits.
“We told them last night that we would need an extraordinary effort and we didn’t get it,” Austin head coach Bill Kinney said. “We’re coming along and we’re making progress although it doesn’t show on the scoreboard. It shows in the technique the kids are executing.”
Kinney said it has been tough to get Austin’s less experienced wrestlers going since the team has had just a handful of matches so far, but the rest of the season will be more busy
“We’ve just not had a lot of matches and we’ve had a lot of practice, but it’s not the same. The rest of our schedule will be pretty full,” he said.
Austin did get some strong performances out of its wrestlers who were aggressive. Thomas Herrera had two takedowns before recording a first period pin with nine seconds to spare in the heavy weight match against Cody Mach.
Herrera nearly pinned Mach the first two times he took him down and the third time was a charm.
“You can easily tell if you will win the match early on if you stick it in there and go tough right away,” Herrera said. “You can tell by his immediate response.”
Kyle Meyer also stayed aggressive in an 8-2 win over Cole McAdam at 160. Meyer had two first period takedowns but didn’t slow it down at all.
“I just go all out until the match is over because you never know what’s going to happen. Something could happen and then it’s over,” Meyer said.
Devon Felten had a solid match at 103 as he led 12-0 halfway through the second period and he ended up with a 17-0 major technical fall. At 130 pounds, Dylan Diekmann came through with a pin with eight seconds left in the first period.
“That’s what were looking for,” Kinney said. “Dylan Diekmann really got it done tonight and I was happy with him. We don’t care if kids make mistakes, as long as they’re aggressive mistakes. If you lose, you want to go down going after them.”
Austin’s toughest loss came at 125, where Tyler Broughton escaped with 14 seconds to beat Alex Amrich 3-2.
