Serife Cakmar, 88, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010.

She was born May 10, 1922, to Sakir and Azime Salbasi in Devrek, Turkey. She married Bedrettin Cakmar on Aug. 28, 1941, in Istanbul. Serife was a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends and family and traveling. During her lifetime, Serife made her home in Turkey, Germany and the United States.

She is survived by her children: Oktay and Filiz Cakmar, El Paso, Texas; Iclal and John Buckles, Austin; Aydin and Anne Cakmar, Melbourne Australia; Ferda and Sakin Aksan, Rochester; eight grandchildren: Derya Cakmar, Marc and Alex Rayman, Jonathan Buckles, Lutfiye and Rehana Aksan, Jessica and Lawrence Cakmar; two great-grandchildren, Elijah and Zoe Rayman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bedrettin; parents, Sakir and Azime Salbasi; sisters, Fatma Kodaman, Halime Ercan and brother, Mehmet Salbasi.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin with Pastor Glenn Monson officiating. Friends are invited to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin following the graveside service for a time of lunch and fellowship with the family.
