Millard Everett “Red” Paulson, 90, of Austin, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, in Belle Plaine, with his family by his side.
Millard was born on June 28, 1920, in LaCrosse, to Edwin and Mabel (Erickson) Paulson. He was raised on a farm in the Lenora area, attending country school through eighth grade, then staying home to help on the family farm.
In Oct. 1941, he was called to serve his country, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, earning a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. After returning home, he moved to Austin to work at Hormel as a meat-packer for 37 years. There he met and later married Marcella “Marc” Stender from Wykoff on Sept. 24, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin. Last year they celebrated their 60th anniversary. They cherished each others company.
Red enjoyed playing cards, golfing, bowling, woodworking, listening to the Twins, and fishing at Lake Mille Lacs. During their retirement years he worked at Usems and spent time in Arizona over the winter months. He was a special “Uncle” who will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He is survived by his brother, Fred of Rochester; two sisters, Barb Becker of Stillwater and Marie Johnson of Oroville, Calif.; sister-in-law, Mildred Danielson of Burr Oak, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella; his parents, Edwin and Mabel, three brothers: Donald, Lyle, and Clifton; two sisters, Alvina Kenyon and Mavis Wrycha.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin, with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Memorials are preferred to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin and the American Legion Post 91.
