Lyle LeRoy Nelson, 92, of Austin, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Lyle was born June 1, 1918, in Newry, to Lena and Nels “Pete” Nelson. On March 21, 1941, he married Esther Schumacher in Osage, Iowa. They were blessed with a daughter, Kay. Lyle served in the Army during WWII in France, Austria and Germany. After returning from the war, Lyle held a number of jobs before becoming a full-time mechanic at Hormel. He worked there for 37 years before retiring.

Throughout his life he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends, wood working, fishing at his cabin on Mille Lacs Lake, the Minnesota Twins, hunting and other outdoor activities. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the VFW and the American Legion.

Lyle is survived by his daughter, Kay DeLaMater, Austin; grandson, Tim (Kris) DeLaMater, Austin; granddaughter, Kimberly (John) Fix, Aurora, Colo.; great-granddaughters: Ashley and Jordan DeLaMater, and Kathryn and Elizabeth Fix; sisters-in-law: Mavis Schumacher, Cis Schumacher, Leona (Don) Mattice, Lillian (Jack) Flynn.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Esther on March 12, 2003; brothers: Ernest, Ruben, Bennie, Louis, Soren, Walter, Hiram; sisters: Gladys Kneen, Mathilda Knotts, Annie Heskitt.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeff Forbes officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home and also one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91 and VFW Post #1216.

Casket bearers will be Tim DeLaMater, John Fix, Tim Flynn, Eugene Nelson, Simon “Pete” Hancock and Justin Laack. Honorary casket bearers will be Hiram Jensen Jr., Hilton Henschen, Leslie Jensen, Ashley DeLaMater, Jordan DeLaMater, Katie Fix and Ellie Fix.
