Austin’s Storm Draayer was back at it at the World Power Lifting Championships in Reno, Nev. this past weekend and he came home with a world title and a state record.
Draayer, who is 12 and weighed in at 154 pounds, broke consecutive state records in the bench press, where he won the world title, when he put up a 126 on his second lift and a 130 on his third lift.
He had to settle for second place in the dead lift as he twice lifted 250 pounds, which would’ve been good for first, but his ankle was a quarter inch off the ground both times.

Storm wasn’t sure how he’d do at the World Championships, but he felt a lot better going into the event than he did last year, which was his first trip.
“I put in a lot more work than I expected to do and I was more nervous last year,” Storm, who has been lifting since he was three and a half years old, said.
Storm’s dad, Christian Draayer, said that his son is starting to get a little more pumped up about power lifting.
“He’s starting to show a little bit of fire and that’s good,” Christian Draayer said. “Most of the good lifters get pretty excited out there and he’s starting to do that.”
Storm, who lifts twice a week for about an hour, says he plans on continuing to lift with the help of his dad and he hopes to get better.
Christian said weight lifting is just part of life for him and his son.
“To me it’s the same thing as English class or carrots, it’s just part of what we do,” Christian said. “You’ve got to eat your vegetables, you’ve got to go to math class and you’ve got to lift. That’s just the way we are and it’s a core part of what we do.”
Storm thanked the following sponsors: Countryside Auto, Margaritaville Bar, Steve’s Pizza and Olson Auto in Brownsdale.
