An Albert Lea man accused of hitting another man over the head with a handgun pleaded not guilty to several felony charges Monday in Mower County Court.

Billy Jamelle Adams, 28, pleaded not guilty to seven felonies – two charges of first-degree burglary, four charges of second-degree assault and one charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The incident in question took place around 7:40 p.m. on Dec. 10 at Bremerton Apartments when three women told officers Adams had walked into the apartment looking for another woman. When they told Adams she no longer lived there, he apparently became upset and pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at them.

The women told police Adams said they were “playing games” with him and demanded to know where the woman was located.

Another man then entered the apartment, according to the criminal complaint, and started arguing with Adams, asking him to leave. Adams then allegedly hit the man over the head with the gun and left. Police photographed a small cut on the back of the man’s head.

One of the women told police she recognized the man and knew his name and address, which is in Albert Lea. Albert Lea police later located the suspect vehicle in which Adams left Bremerton. The driver of the car was identified as Wayne Foster Tuttle, 25.

Tuttle told police Adams had asked him for a ride to Bremerton and that he never saw Adams with a gun, but Adams had apparently told him he had hit someone over the head with one when the two left Bremerton.

When officers spoke with Adams, he said they picked up a “black BB gun” at Tuttle’s residence after Tuttle picked him up. He said he was very intoxicated and didn’t remember having the gun with him at Bremerton.

When investigators spoke with Tuttle a second time, he admitted to lying about the gun and said Adams had a black BB gun that looked like a semi-automatic handgun with him when he got into the car. Tuttle said he didn’t see the BB gun again after Adams returned to the car from Bremerton and said it was not disposed on the way back to Albert Lea.

The criminal complaint said Adams was “agitated and uncooperative” while being transported from Albert Lea to the Mower County jail after the incident.

He will appear in court for a jury trial on Feb. 22.
