The Salvation Army began its annual kettle drive Friday and will be ringing bells at area retailers until Christmas.

This is the second year Cathy Adams of Austin has helped the Salvation Army with the fundraiser. She first got involved with the organization through her church.

One of two bell ringers outside of Wal-Mart on Nov. 12, Adams said the cold, snow and sleet does not bother her.

“I’m from Minnesota; I’m used to it,” she said. “I’m just happy to help out.”

This year, she will be volunteering several hours each day throughout the rest of the drive.

Bob Stratton, a retired Hormel employee and resident of Austin, volunteered for the Kettle drive for his first time on Friday and will also continue to help throughout the rest of the drive.

Many others, including the Austin Bruins hockey team, will be ringing the bells at different times and locations throughout the holiday season.
