GOODHUE — It was almost an incredible comeback, it was the end of the road for Blooming Prairie as it lost the Section 1A football title game 28-13 in Goodhue Friday.
The No. 2 seeded Blossoms (8-3 overall) scored on a 15-yard screen pass to Luke Hueman from Luc Zellmer with 3:53 left to make it 21-13 and they recovered an on-side kick to take possession.
But things came to a screeching halt when Goodhue senior corner Blayne Erie shook off a BP blocker on a screen play, stripped Jon Kraling of the ball and recovered it at the Goodhue 29-yard line with 3:15 left in the game.

“We had lots of chances and a lot of things went wrong on that play,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “We missed a couple of blocks and it’s not just the fumble that lost us the game. There were a couple of plays I wish I could’ve called differently too. We win and lose as a team.”
When No. 1 seeded Goodhue (8-3 overall) got the ball, Jared Dicke put the exclamation point on a night that saw him run for 305 yards and three scores on 39 carries. Dicke finished a five play, 71-yard drive with a one-yard run to ice the contest.
“He’s just an all-around good athlete,” BP corner and receiver Gabe Kartes said of Dicke. “He runs hard and everything he did, he deserved it. I give it to him. He really worked hard and when he hits you feel it.”
BP trailed 14-0 at the half after their offense came up short in Goodhue territory twice. Zellmer overthrew Kartes on fourth and goal from the five and Erie picked off Zellmer at the Goodhue 15-yard line.
“We never know what teams are going to come out in against us,” Gimbel said. “They came out with five guys in the box and they were covering over the top. They took away our passing game and we had to run the football.”

BP will graduate five players, which includes Cooper Nelson and Dylan Hatch, and Kartes, a junior who had 106 yards receiving yards on Friday, thinks the team will be back strong next season.
“(Luke) Hueman’s only going to hit harder, Zellmer’s only going to throw farther and I’m just going to get faster hopefully,” he said. “This was a lesson, you can’t get a big head and just because we did good last year doesn’t mean we’ll do good this year. You have to work for it.”
