The third time was a charm for Emily Sayles, a fifth-grader at Banfield Elementary School. For three years, she’d entered the Hormel Foods Home+Heart+Art Winter Holiday Art Competition and, until this year, she didn’t win.
This year, Emily beat out over 120 competitors from around the world with a collage of a Christmas tree.
“I was doing a mosaic for art last year for art class, but we didn’t have time to finish them,” Sayles said.
While her original mosaic was a flower, Sayles’s sister thought she should make another mosaic for her entry this year. Sayles said she made her winning piece from different colored paper over several days.

Emily won a $500 scholarship for art classes and supplies, while two runners up will receive $100 scholarships. The top three art pieces will be used by Hormel for their holiday cards, which will be sent to more than 27,000 people around the world.
It seems she won’t be resting on her laurels, however.
“She’s already asked me, ‘Can I enter again next year?’” Chad Sayles, her father, said.
