If you provide the supplies, Riverland Community College will provide the athletic workers as part of its annual Rent an Athlete community clean-up fundraiser.

The athletes at Riverland will be doing odd jobs for community members who could use some help with their chores from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat., Oct. 30.

Rent an Athlete, the brainchild of Riverland Athletic Director David Lillemon, has been going on for 16 years, according to Lillemon.

“Years and years ago I wanted to do something for the community,” Lillemon said.’

To employ some of the Riverland athletes, participants specify how many workers they want, what the job is, how long they want the workers, and when they would like them. All donation proceeds go toward the Riverland Booster Club, which helps fund all Riverland sports.

“It’s been very good for every one of our kids,” Lillemon said. “They’re giving back to the community and to the college.”

While all 99 student athletes and some of their coaching staff will be available for all sorts of odd jobs, from yard work to leaf raking and pick-up to house cleaning, anyone who wants to donate must provide their own cleaning supplies.

Last year, Riverland athletes completed 26 jobs and raised about $2,000, according to Lillemon. The goal this year, he said, is to get between $1,500 and $2,500, although more donations couldn’t hurt. Lillemon said he usually suggests a donation of $8 per worker per hour they work.
