The Austin volleyball team is still looking for a go-to hitter as it lost at Rochester Century (2-2 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) 25-10, 25-22, 25-18 Thursday.
The Packers (0-3 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) didn’t have any hitter with more than four kills as they struggled with consistency on the night.
“I would have liked to have seen a bit more aggressive net play from some of my seniors,” Austin head coach Darica Schneider said. “I think when we finally find the “it” girl who can be our go-to and really commands quality on the court, we will mesh better as a team and will be able to overcome setbacks much easier than we are currently.”
Austin started off sluggish in the first game, played strong in the second and had mixtures of both in the last game.
“We had moments of grandeur and we had some not so impressive moments as well (in the third game),” Schneider said. “We made poor decisions in the first game, were slow to the ball, missed serves, and didn’t communicate — all things that are under our control on our side of the net.”
Everyone chipped in for the Packers in the second game, which they only lost by three.
“There was a lot more hustle to the ball and we were putting the ball in the hitter’s hands,” Schneider said. “If the girls weren’t screaming and jumping up and down from the bench, they were contributing on the floor.”
Austin stats: Babaye Oja, 4 kills, 1 block; Jenny Soiney 4 kills, 6 digs; Jenna Svoboda 9 set assists; Jessica McCormack, 3 kills; Ashley Arhart, 6 digs, 2 ace serves; Haley Underwood, 1 ace serve
